My moms friend called yesterday to make sure we weren't using heating pads in the tortoise tanks. Apparently her friend was using one and the tortoise thought the cord was food so he chewed through it. Well it caused a house fire. Luckily her dog woke her up and she managed to get out. She lost two rooms and her tortoise ):

Wow, that's no good. This is why my heat pads go under the tank, not in it. No exposed wires.

The Stanfield ones are made for Pigs so are pretty hardy and strong..

I'm not sure what kind of tortoise it was :/
But I'm pretty sure it was just one of those heating pads you get at like petco.

That's sad. Unfortunately it doesn't take a whole lot on some of those cords to bite into the wire. I have had even some young kittens that could do it.

Sorry to hear about your friends house and torts, no good! The Zoo Med Habitat Heaters have about a foot of steel coiling around the wire to keep torts from chewing through it.

Sorry to hear.. esp. that she lost her tortoise. :( I surprised something small can cause such a big fire!

sorry to hear about that but wonder why it did not trip a circuit breaker or
blow a fuse.
