Thanks for the update! They mention exactly the same articles, I've been able to find. However, yes, there is no definite answer on safety of this plant (I wasn't able to find any references on presence of it in the natural habitats) and experiments on mammals aren't very representative.
Let's mark it as "Do not feed, keep out of reach. However occasional grazing of couple of leaves should not have adverse effects".
Off the record:
Chicken wire won't help against adult sulcata. Cinder blocks with metal rods inside would (maybe). I guess OP knows that from experience.
