The photos are if the same kind of weed. Late growers here in SoCal apparently.

It's edible. I get mixed up between the sow thistles and the prickly lettuces, but it's one of those.

I can't keep track of all the names either, but I've been feeding that one for years. They love it and the spines don't even slow them down.

Bit late, but my guess would be prickly lettuce as, I believe, the spiny sow thistle does not have that line of spines down the stem.

All the prickly lettuce I've seen (called milk thistle here) resembles dandelion more than sow thistle. So, I have to remain resolute in my ID here...plus the spines appear as the weed matures...they're not there in the early stages ;)

Ah, but prickly sow thistle does not have spines running along the central vein underneath each leaf.
These appear to.
And I would say no to noticeable stem spines and bigger spines on leaf margins as well as a more curved around join to the stem. (though this last is not clear, here.)
So, I will remain resolute also!
Not that it matters. They're both very popular with Tidgy.
I doubt she cares.

ALL of them are known as milk thistles in some areas.
But, yes the genus Silybum (great name)is the correct nomenclature.
S'why Latin names are best.
So I say Lactuca for this one.
