Hi

I am a breeder of T. hermanni. All my torts came from the French continental part (Massif des Maures, Var). However, I am definitely fan of herping. This year I had the chance to go to Mallorca, in the Balearic island (Spain) where the specie is well represented (many viable populations).

Here are the pictures (May and July 2009)

Wild Mediterranean fan palm (yeah I am a PALM addict too...)

"Guarrigue" (french word for mediterannean landscape)

Roadkilled tortoise, near human houses... Life's hard

Mating couple in May

Adult male alone

A hole where I found 3 juveniles, during estivation (July), we can see tort poo...

Juveniles

Group

Oldest juvenile, probably 6+ years

the same, with another juvenile (you can notice that he is very yellow)

Juvenile 3

An egg found near a path... in July

End!
Me in the wild !

How lucky you were to be able to go there and see where your tortoises come from! Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.

I can understand your feeling about it, however that's what happens. I mean, there's necessary to understand that roadkill is primarily one of the first (probably the first) reason of decrease of wild populations. That is part of the herping trip too.
It is so sad...and it really happens often. That's reality.
