Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

He seems to be over any detrimental effects of the medication! I'm still giving him warm water soaks twice a day and keeping him indoors at night for extra warmth and protection, but his activity level and appetite seem to be back to normal! He still needs to be treated for pinworms, but I'm...

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

Jetta had a scary night, hadn't eaten and went "to bed" in his hide very early for him (he's an active little guy). But the next morning he seemed to be okay. I've been soaking him and it's cleaned him out a bit. I'm keeping him indoors in the evening for observation to and to keep him warmer...

Thank you for the update! I'm glad that she doesn't require anesthesia and surgery!

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

I got the vet's name from the list here at Tortoise forum, btw. Not sure if this situation is enough to delete the name, but thought I'd mention it.

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

I called another vet, in another town, and he said Ivermectin should not be given to tortoises. He said I should watch Jetta and if he stops eating or moving, I should bring him in. I'm going to keep Jetta inside for observation until I'm sure he's okay, then I'll bring him to the new doctor to...

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

Maybe there is a difference between oral and injected doses. I'm praying so. I called my vet, but they were useless. The reptile/bird vet only works two days a week, and apparently can't be phone for emergencies, if the concern of a patient's owner over a med's toxicity or fatality is even...

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

According to Melissa Kaplan's Herp Care Collection, http://www.anapsid.org/resources/rxdose.html: Ivermectin is administered in near-toxic doses to be effective, and must be repeated often 3 times to be as effective as the far less toxic fenbendazole. Merck, the maker of ivermectin, does not...

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

Okay, just did a search on his meds and found out Ivermectin is toxic, possible fatal, to tortoises. Call in to vet, but this is the vet who prescribed them (found him on the vet list here). So, HFS, what do I do?

Jetta failed his fecal test. Pinworms.

So, while Jetta was at the vet for his shell abrasion, he pooped on the examination table and we decided to do a fecal test for parasites given the opportunity. Results back, he has pinworms, which are common, but if they get too numerous (the doctor said they were over 3, not sure what that...

    Tender/sore scute

Treatment going well, although he hates me for handling him so much. Under the Bandaid, there's a bit of gauze pad with Neosporin on it, to cover more of the healing tissue area and protect it from the sun.

    Tender/sore scute

The vet said he thinks Jetta had been dropped on this rear end in the past, thus the odd shape of the scutes back there. He has no idea what could have caused the current injury, and I don't either. I just have to keep the wound clean by cleansing it every other day, applying Betadine and...

    Tender/sore scute

Yes, like it's attached and shouldn't be. The doctor will tell me what the deal is. We're going tomorrow morning.

    Tender/sore scute

I made a vet appointment for tomorrow after all. I figure, you can't be too careful.

    Tender/sore scute

Gave Jetta a bath today, and noticed after the initial soaking that he had a whitish spot on his rear-most scute. After I used a very soft complexion brush on it (the kind you use on an infant), I could tell it was tender or sore for the poor fella. I put some antibiotic ointment on it, gave him...

He has eyes, and occasionally, when they catch the light, they sparkle. But in this photo, they look like little black holes, I agree. Here are his adorable eyes:

Heated cave for Jetta (outdoor Russian tortoise)

Jetta lives outside, has free range of the back yard. It gets chilly here at night (fifties, high forties at times), so I was worried he would be having trouble with digestion, respiration. So I got him an outdoor heating pad and built a little cave for him to hide in at night. It has plenty of...

This is Jetta. He came to stay with us a month ago, and I'm smitten with him. Here he is eating his brunch:

I've been adopted by a Russian tortoise in N. California.

The only area that he could dig under the fence to get out is the area that borders on my neighbor, the tortoise keeper's, yard, and he'd have to dig pretty deep now that we installed the wire fencing. There's concrete on the other three sides, and the fence goes straight down to the concrete. I...

I've been adopted by a Russian tortoise in N. California.

I found him, very freshly dug up from hibernation, on February 29th. He's been cruising my yard ever since. I feed him a pile of greens and sometimes flowers every day, and he has plenty of weeds in the yard, and a shallow pan of water which I change daily. He has a few hides behind my cottage...
