Update
Just a little update. Humidity was the problem. I removed the "repti-bark" and replaced it with "eco-earth" from zoo med. It's much messier but retains humidity great so:D. I also changed his hide from a few pieces of driftwood (which looked great but probably left a little to be...
Ok, so now my young redfoot can't open his eyes. It started slow, where he appeared to just struggle opening his eyes when he was dry but would open them when they got wet. So I increased the misting frequency and now he can't open them at all. I just soaked him for 15 minutes with no...
Terry,
The heat bulb is also the light, and there is an under tank heater as well. I will look into the heat emitter though.
That being said, I changed to a lower wattage bulb, the temps are down to 75-80 and he is out walking around, almost immediately. This NEVER happens so I assume that...
Terry,
Thanks for the care sheet, I just read it....twice. There is a ton of good info in there. After reading that and your post I immediately thought "too hot, too bright", then Yvonne came in and really hit it home, thanks Yvonne. I have a lower wattage heat bulb that I'm going to put in...
I was concerned about the Tortoise Bites in the beginning myself but he actually eats those more than the greens, that's the only reason I haven't thrown them away.
I've had him for almost a month, not long. I do soak him but I might not being doing it right or frequently enough. He does...
Ok, I know that torts aren't the most active and exciting pet out there but I'm starting to get worried. My young Redfoot does not leave his hide unless I take him out to feed him. Not rarely, not once in a while, never. When I take him out to feed he picks at his greens a while and goes back...
The Army did my PRK and it's great. I laid down for the procedure and had 20/20 vision before I got out the seat. Of-course it got bad for a few days before it went back to 20/20 but it's been 20/20 for two years now. There really isn't much you can do prior to prepare, unless you have...
If all pet owners were had half the sense you do animals around the world would live much better lives. Back in my pet store days I remember telling potential customers that they should really research their pet BEFORE buying it and they would look at me like I was crazy. I would get so...
From what I understand the best she has is a top 5 in the Indianapolis 500. No small feat, but I think her entrance to NASCAR is a little too hyped up. I'm far more impressed with Chrissy Wallace and Patrick is stealing all her thunder.
I've never been bit by any of my turtles, and the tortoise hasn't tried yet but I cut myself making his meal today and I'm pretty sure he got a little taste.
Ok, so I have a new Redfoot that apparently would love to hide under the substrate all day every day if I let him. I know that hiding is common among tortoises, espescially the young ones. But I also know that getting nourishment is important for the youngsters. If I just put his food in with...
Personally I wouldn't do it. You have no way of knowing what was used to grow them or preserve them. And considering they were probably mass produced there is a good chance considerable "miracle grow" type products were used.
My situation may be "special" because I am in the Military but my home of record is Illinois and I'm currently stationed in Kansas. I do not pay Kansas or Illinois taxes:D. None in Kansas because this is not my home of record and none in Illinois because they don't make their Military pay...
Well in all my extensive Redfoot experience (3 days now) I have seen my little guy/gal do it quite a bit. It seems to coincide with me putting my hand in his enclosure. I'm guessing he does it when he's nervous or wants me to back off.
I know you are looking for an organization but if you don't find one I am sure there are people right here on this forum that would be more than happy to take on a few rescues. Many of them are probably more knowledgeable and capable then the kind of organization you are looking for. Good luck...
I can't figure out why someone would use a Crested as a feeder. Take away the fact that they are a great and interesting reptile and it still doesn't make sense financially. That being said it really isn't any different than feeding mice to a snake. Thousands of people keep mice and rats as...
Well we have only had him a few days but so far he's had fresh greens and some "Tortoise Bites" that the store recommended. I'm pretty sure I'm doing away with the bites and I'm picking up some powdered calcium carbonate tomorrow.
