    Calcium

He just avoids it altogether, I don't know if its a smell or something. Dandelion flowers are his favourite thing ever he usually runs over when I place them in but if I've put any calcium powder on he wont go near. :(

    Calcium

Hey everybody, I am worried about the amount of calcium my western Herman is getting. He has a cuttlefish bone in his enclosure but he wont go near it. I have tried using the supplement powders also, but when I sprinkle even the smallest amount on his food he wont touch it. His diet is mostly...

The ivy is fake which I'm really glad of after reading that.

    Does Sherlock's enclosure seem alright?

Hey guys, I have Sherlock for a while now but I am still always worried that his enclosure is lacking. I've popped a few dandelion seeds in around the enclosure for a bit more cover for him since this pic. :tort: Emma

    Shell Growth

Yeah Tom, that was what I was using, I found that there was white mould around the enclosure. this worried me so I removed it straight away. this was after a pretty short time as well. The stuff I used was from ikea so maybe it wasn't sterile or I was keeping it to moist. I will try again with...

    Shell Growth

I did try coco coir and that got a white fluff on it. The herbifloor claims to be especially for tortoises. I feel like i'm doing everything right except the substrate. nothing I try seems to be perfect. =[

    Shell Growth

I have no idea it doesn't say anything on the bag I got it in. all I know is that it safe for them to eat. it looks like compressed grass pellets or something.

    Shell Growth

Hi guys, its good to hear that you don't think that the pyramiding isn't getting worse. Since these pictures I have swapped out the aspen bedding to a substrate called herbifloor, which is specially made for tortoises. He has always had a humid hide since I have had him, that has moss in it. The...

    Shell Growth

Hey all, I have had Sherlock, my dwarf Hermann for about 4 months now. When I got him his shell was not completely smooth but as he is growing it seems to be getting worse. Could someone please let me know if this normal or if there is some pyramiding going on. I have included some recent...

    Aspen bedding

Hey all, I have this in my enclosure now, but I keep being told by other keepers that it is bad for the tortoise if they ingest it. I would remove it but everyone here seems to rave about it. I'm just really confused about what to do. The latest advice I received was to use Herbifloor which is...

    Substrate

Yup that's the stuff. Sherlock seems to like it now, I have popped a few large stones on top so he has something to keep he nails in trim.

    Tortoise sleep-over

Hi, 2 months ago me and a friend both got a yearling Hermann tortoise each and in a couple of weeks my friend is going away. my question is, is it ok for me to bring his tortoise to live here with me and Sherlock for the few weeks that he is away. They are the same age and from the same parent...

    Substrate

Sherlock is a yearling. So I had a lil play with his box, he now has one side of his box with a coconut coir/husk mix and on the other side (the hot side) I have left the wood chips, he often digs about in the wood chips. He seems happy enough and the humidity on his tortoise table seems to be...

    Post Open-Mouthed Tortie Piccies! :D

Here is my yearling Hermann tortoise, Sherlock, trying to grab a treat from me. I love it when he yawns but I couldn't grab the camera in time. lol enjoy :D [hr] SOOOOO Cute! lol I will have to try the fake yawning see if I fool Sherlock into yawning. hahaha:P

    Substrate

Hello, I think the stuff from Ikea is a mix of coconut coir and husk but Sherlock was just getting all bogged down in it even after I dried it out. He seems fairly happy on the wood chips but I've heard bad things about it. I dunno what to do, there seems to be a down side to all the options for...

    Sherlock!!!

He is a Testudo Hermanni Hermanni so he is a little smaller than a regular Testudo Hermanni Boettgeri, I think his paper work just says Testudo Hermanni but after a but of research I think he is Hermanni hermanni (he has the key hole pattern on the back of his shell).

Manchester in England. It's been very hot here so me and Sherlock have been having adventures in the garden (keeping a very close eye on him and only for an hour or 2). :D
