Thanks everybody for your comments and links etc! I took Wills advice and spoke to Andy Highfield who confirmed that Bernard is in fact an Algerian Whitei and is at least 60 years old, possibly as old as 80. Amazing as that is to find out, I cant help wondering if that means Bernard may not have...

That's right Yvonne, i am in the UK :-) Yes the person who responded to my email from the 'tortoise trust' also judged it to be fairly old from the picture i sent them, but didn't really tell me anything more than that. So Mediterranean Greek is your guess then? That is what I have been thinking...
