Yvonne, I am grateful that most of the year they can do what they do....the old man is the only one up for an enclosure upgrade....since he remembered he was a desert tort and dug his digs I have to grow off of his current space, so a bit tricky since he is right outside the front porch--with his less than perfect eye sight I don't want him too far out of range at night..silly I know, but just makes me feel better to know in a moments notice I can be on the porch swinging ....
David, his burrow is only about 4 feet down (near 45 degree angle with a turn around at the bottom) he dug it I believe mostly last summer when the temps were high and apparently the above ground hut I did for him was not to his liking....I was thrilled to see him do this, he was a tort that I had to nurse a couple of times when we first met because he was severely impacted with sand ...so once that thankfully worked out then he had a GIGANTIC abscess that had to be cleared apparently from either an injury or a malfunctioning of a salivary gland or two...but he handled both one at a time...so when he felt well enough he must have recalled he is a digger and got to doing his thing....
