Let me preface this by saying, if you're building an enclosure from scratch, this is probably not the way to go about it. But, if, like me, you have your new (or old) tortoise in a mixing tub, and realize, after reading info on this site, that you want to enclose your setup, this is a pretty...
Excellent read. I'm just re-entering the tortoise husbandry research world. A lot has changed since I got my Egyptian tortoise 13 years ago. In retrospect, I wish I'd continued to read and stay on top of the latest ideas during the past few years. She has some moderate pyramiding that maybe I...
I think you need to click on some of the links the others have posted so you can see photos. You'll need to build some kind of frame to hold the plastic. Imagine a greenhouse.
I think shower curtains are pretty much a standard size. Any if them should cover your tub (looks like a cement mixing tub, right?) While I disagree that you couldn't make saran wrap work, I definitely think something like a shower curtain would be easier to work with, and maybe even cheaper...
Just thought I'd reintroduce myself, and introduce my new leopard tortoise. I joined this site many years ago, but never posted much. I have an Egyptian tortoise that I've had for, I think about 14 years, but that was my only tortoise until yesterday.
I've been wanting a leopard tortoise for...
I'm sure you can rig up some kind of frame with plastic wrap around it that will hold humidity. If you're still having trouble with ambient temps, try insulating it by putting old towels or something over the plastic. But, be very careful that everything is solid so it doesn't fall and become a...
I haven't done it yet. Just got my tortoise yesterday, and like you, after some reading here, I realize I probably need to enclose my setup. But, I'm thinking I could throw together a box made of foam insulation board in 15 minutes. Just size it to fit over your tub.
Just a suggestion to the original poster. I'm kind of in the same boat. I just picked up my first leopard tortoise yesterday. I thought I had a pretty good handle on care. I've been keeping reptiles since the 80's, but my only tortoise, until now, is an Egyptian tortoise I've had for about 14...
:D thanks.
Nice. Pokey was about that size when I got him from Dan. He still seems small, but when I look back at the photos I remember just how small he used to be.
Thanks! Pokey appreciates the compliments. As far as the avatar, I was just fooling around in Flash when I was first...
Thanks everyone. He is a neat little guy. It's cool to know he'll likely outlive me and get passed on to my daughter who also loves him.
Hi Dan. How is life in tortoise paradise? I may try to post some photos tomorrow to try to get you to help me sex Pokey. I still don't know if Pokey is a...
So if humidity has now been determined to be one of, if not the main cause of pyramiding, then how much humidity do I need? I have an egyptian tortoise that supposedly thrives in very low humidity. He's now about 2 1/2 years old and there is a little bit of pyramiding, nothing excessive, but...
