Good evening everyone!

I've had a busy day and after giving Jacky her bath I spent the afternoon at my favourite Two Tree Island nature reserve and below is a list of what I saw:

Gulls
Mallards
Teal
Coots
Moor Hens
Linnets
Goldfinches
Reed Buntings
Avocets
Brent (getting ready to go back to Siberia)
Canada Geese on a nest
Red Shank
Oyster Catchers

I took several pictures in the order of Leigh-On-Sea, Hadleigh Castle, Brent Geese in front of Hadleigh Castle, Benfleet, Canvey Island with the Stanford-le-Hope docklands in the background, Leigh, Westcliff and Southend.

Goodnight everyone

Dear Natrah - I saw a white bird which I think is a Little Egret in your photo, but not sure about the Avocet.
It has been a very wet day,and the rain was very noisy on my roof - a lot of farmers are getting worried about their fields - crops getting soggy, or not being able to plant stuff because the ground is so wet that tractors just sink in and compact the soil.
Tomorrow we go to Tavistock for my mum's injections - two very big ones, in the back of her neck,
instead of 35 little ones - but maybe we will get news about the new treatment she may be getting.
I hope you will have a good day tomorrow.
Lots of love to you, Jacky, Angel Daisy and all my forum friends
from Zola xxxxx

Dear Zola,

I'll have to look it up as it could have been a Little Egret and that means I saw to of them. I'm sorry you've had a lot of rain it was sunnier hear today but we did have a shower in the afternoon with my washing on the line. Anyway I hope Angie is okay tomorrow and won't have to those injections again.

I had lunch on the cliffs but it was cold and then I went to pick dandelions for Jacky. @zolasmum, @MoggyMad and @CathieG after Daisy passed away I joined an online pet-loss group and more recently I joined the Essex Tortoise Group and these groups but in the space of three I have been told by two people what I shouldn't be feeding Jacky. I was told by one on the pet-loss group that Jacky needs a varied diet without spring greens and tomatoes and today I posted that the picture below of Jacky eating her dandelions which I specified as an Easter treat and one person from the Essex Group (which I joined two weeks ago by invitation from a friend) said that I should give her a varied diet. The person from the pet-loss group knows that Daisy was 80 years old when she was put to sleep and that I have had her all my life. She also knows that Jacky is 88 and I have posted a thread on the Essex Tortoise Group about Daisy so that the person who advised me today is aware that I know something about tortoises.

It's a wonder that Jacky and Daisy lived so long with their diet. Last year when Jacky spent a few nights at the vets tests showed that apart from not eating after a disruptive hibernation her diet diet after these years was okay. Daisy had a scan and a couple of blood tests and the vet reached the same conclusion. Tomatoes have to be very ripe which is how I like them as well. I would say we are all experienced tortoise parents and we know our pets best of all and in my experience I have tried other vegetables and weeds with Jacky and Daisy and they have turned their noses up at them!

Sorry for the long post

Goodnight everyone

Natrah, Jacky and Angel

PS: Is that picture of Jacky enjoying Easter although she didn't eat all the dandelions!IMG20240401142359.jpg

Dear Natrah This is just to say that personally, I think you should feed what Jacky has always been used to for 88 years - if you started changing her diet, her stomach might not be able to cope with new things after all this time, even though theoretically they might be better for her ! And it would probably distress her too.
If she were a young tortoise you might try to change things gradually, but you know what she likes - you are the expert here !!!
Love from Angie,ad don't let this upset you xxxxx

Thankyou Angie.

She has tried a couple of new things in the last few years. It was just being able to post without people saying 'no' to the things she loves when even the vet was okay with her diet. I'm thinking of trying her with Radicchio if she doesn't like even a little bit then I won't give it next time. I try to mix with her other favourite foods. I think we should all carry on as we are also with the sweet things I've been I should be dieting as well🤣.

Goodnight Angie

Yes, radicchio is very suitable ,- as you know, Zola loves it, but I generally shred it roughly, as I do with his other things, and mix them all together.

Dear Angie,

I forgot to say that I replied to the person today saying that Jacky had also eaten Kale and Lettuce and they replied with an 🤔 which I don't always understand anyway. I better keep her strawberry treats quiet 🤫!

Natrah I always find the well meaning advice on here helpful so I agree with Angie to continue with what Jacky is used to.
We have followed your suggestion of using a heat lamp & today for the first time Dickie had a few bites of a cherry & a bit of cabbage once she went back outside in the sun. It helped that it was a lovely sunny afternoon. Small start but relief that she at least showed some interest in food.
The neighbour is picking dandelion heads & leaves for her that looks like the plateful that Jacky was tucking into. She didnt eat any but we‘ll try again tomorrow!

So thankyou.
Goodnight all

Dear Angie,

I just want to say I'm thinking of you today and I hope you have some sun. It's not that warm here. Zola please look after your mum.

Dear Angie, Sue, Marsha, Cathie, Zola, Dickie, Sherman, PeeWee, Seymour and Sapphire,

I'm writing on behalf of Jacky who was most amused upset about the conversation regarding her diet. She says that she is 88 and she's not going to change. She says Daisy won't like being told not to eat her favourite foods and the two loved fighting over strawberries. However later I told her that I noticed another reply to the thread from Norfolk Tortoise Group which 'Nice North Africa Spur'! Jacky thought this was funny and wants me to let Sherman and PeeWee know about this.

Anyway Angie how are you feeling? Have they said anything about you avoiding the injections? Dickie have you eaten anymore? I gave Jacky some more dandelions today but there was grass with it as well.

Goodnight everyone

Hello Natrah - Just a quick note to say that I had my neck injections today, but the nurse says I should be starting on this new treatment within a few weeks. It is called Atogepant, and is just one pill a day. It may not work on me,so I shall be keeping my fingers crossed !
By the way, when you skim through the many posts here about tortoise food, dandelions are mentioned as a very good food by lots of very knowledgeable people, such as Tom and Yvonne, so the person who seemingly objected to dandelions is clearly wrong.
Love to you, Jacky and Angel Daisy and our forum friends from Zola and Angie xxxxxxxx

No Dickie hasnt eaten today but she did come out of her box herself, without one of us having to get her out, although it was 2pm by then. That’s when we had the most sun although it wasn’t that warm. Its rained this evening & the forecast looks like rain tomorrow for some of the day so not good.
George (cat) had a dental today & a cyst removed. He had 4 teeth removed & has stitches in his mouth & on his back. Amazingly he still wants his food!
Have been looking online for tortoise vet, our vets don’t have expertise. The nearest looks about 40 miles away far side of Bedford. We’ll see how it goes with Dickie & continue with the lamp & warm baths tomorrow but I think a vet visit is on the cards, her back claws need trimming too.
Keep enjoying the dandelions Jacky 😊

Dear George,

We hope you feel better soon do you have to gargle with salt water like Natrah did? Dilly and Razberri have been given something to chew on to help their teeth? We don't have teeth but Natrah we have strong jaws. Dickie, Zola, Sapphire, Sherman and I need strong for our vegetables we need to keep munching to build up strength for playtime and hibernation. I am not going to listen to people telling me not to eat too many dandelions and no strawberries. I am 88 and I need respect. I also don't know why I need to be drowned every few days! Anyway today's drowning session lasted quite a while and I was very tired. However I was pleased to have a go on the bathroom scales and Natrah was pleased with my weight.

Dickie you need to eat a lot more and you should try Romaine Lettuce and spring greens (another of my favourites which Natrah was told to moderate but is going to ignore). I have a well-balanced diet and I do eat other things. Zola will also advise you to eat although he is busy looking after his dear mum who we hope feels.

Goodnight everyone

Jacky, Angel Daisy and Natrah
