Here's some pictures of today's rescue. The chew marks are very old, and a good lesson in how the keratin re-grows UNDER the dead bone. You can see it better in person, because I have a hard time with blurry pictures, but look closely on the right side of the carapace. As the tortoise grew, the old dead bone is splitting to make room for the growth going on underneath. You can see under the split some shiney, new keratin:
He has some old shell rot on the plastron too:
