I have a couple young sulcatas that I'm having trouble finding homes for, so I thought I might post them on a free classified place. While I was looking where to post the ad, I found this one:

http://centralvalley.ebayclassifieds.com/other-pets/modesto/tortises/?ad=14491912

What kind of tortoises do you all think these are? They look sort of marginated, sort of hermanni, sort of ??? and very badly cared for.

I have no idea what they are, but they have not been well taking care of for sure..

Those look like desert tortoises...I don't know how similar the Sonoran and California desert tortoises are to each other, but those look like a lot of the Sonorans I've seen.

The pyramiding isn't as concerning as how flat they look.

That was my thought too. I also wondered about the sulcata that don't have the massive leg armor. The pictures just are not close enough for these old eyes to decide between those two choices.

I thought they were desert torts, almost resemble a Sulcata but not large enough and I dont see large spurs but there are some, they are rather flat and very pyramided

Why can't anyone buy a desert tortoise? Is there a law?

I believe in California it's illegal to buy or sell desert tortoises.

You can't buy or sell, they are a protected species. Also you can't buy say 200 dollars worth of equipment, or care manuals and get one for free with a purchase (several people tried that some years ago).
