I have a 2 inch Hermans tortoise and would like to put him outside a few hours a day while I am out in my yard. Would this metal fence work? It is buried into the ground about two inchesImageUploadedByTortForum1401564750.287451.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1401564768.851680.jpg
ImageUploadedByTortForum1401564782.966941.jpg I have some netting that fits over the top to keep birds away. It's a nice spot against my house with 3 rose bushes inside.

I use something very similar for Joe, but he is much bigger. Are you sure he won't fit through any of the gaps? I'm not.

No. You need a visual barrier for tortoises. They can also climb things like that. Bricks, boards, logs, smooth siding, or something of that nature is necessary.

Ok, thanks, I have a wooden bottomless frame I am using now, but I want something more natural than a rectangle frame. Maybe I'll try a stone or brick wall....

Just make sure there are no foot holds for climbing and an overhang at the top will help keep them inside the enclosure too.

Ok, do I need to keep it covered? I have a fenced in yard, would not leave him out at night and am really only worried about birds. I live in upstate NY. Would a crow bother him?

No, a little tortoise will just walk right through that fence. You can always line the inside of it with boards.

I would. Lots of birds or other animals can mess with a tortoise that small. I worry less once they are about 4", but this depends on everyone's individual situation.

As far as birds I bring home the netting that my company gets when we get in patato or onions by the pallets it works great and it's free !
And like Tom says if the tort can see out it will try to get out . But Herrmanns are great !ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1401571779.016826.jpg
