The desert fixture and light will provide the UVB the tortoise needs, but you'll still need a heat source/light.

Neither. Zilla is not a brand to go with.

We assume you are looking for UVB light. For Russian tortortoise Zoomed T5HO 5% or 10% depending on the distance the fixture will be above the substrate. Better visible light and UVB spectrum.
Look online, it will be same price or cheaper as Zilla.

I concur, :) Remember, you can save a TON of money buying the heat lamp fixture at a hardware store or Wal-Mart! Literally like 75% cheaper and just as good. The only thing is they are not adjustable so you have to adjust the heat by raising and lowering the light. I use 60 watt flood lights, the soft kind. they are $7.98 for a four pack of Wal-Mart ones. Torts love them and they give good heat.

I took a brood lamp from our farm for heat unfortunately it's only got the red lamp which seems to be advised for night use. I had a sneaky feeling the desert one was going to be what I needed. Thank you for your advice

Don't use a night light with your Russians. If you need some heat at night get a Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE).

Russians seem to do well when the night temperature drops to about 65 degrees and they don't have red lights or night lights in the wild. :)

Try the tube light for UV then just use a flood light for heat; adjust height and/or wattage to achieve 95 degree basking spot.

Good luck!

As another $$ saver-- check on Amazon, too, for supplies. If you can work out getting free shipping, a lot of the stuff is cheaper on there than you can find in pet stores (at least in my area)

Lou, you can temporarily use the red bulb during the day for heat, as long as you also have a UV source.
Then, when you can get to the store, get the Halogen flood lights for heat and adjust height to get the temps you want.
Something like this:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bulbrite-...od-Light-Bulb-in-Warm-White-Set-of-6/20818931
You can just use a brooder fixture (ceramic base) from home depot or a feed store for <$10

I also like the Zoomed Reptisun 10.0 (for Russians). Right now Drs. Foster and Smith are having a sale on this brand.
These bulbs are good for about 6 months.
I get the fixture at Fred Meyer or Home Depot and remove the plastic cover.Make sure you get a wired fixture (unless you know how to wire them). You can also get these on Amazon.
The length will depend on the size of your enclosure, but longer is better: you want the UV spread out over the basking area and into the rest of the enclosure a bit.

Lou, the main thing you need right now is light and heat. So as long as your tortoise can warm up, that's fine, you have time to get the other fixtures in place.

Can you use grow lights with "full sun spectrum" for torts?

Thank you for the info I am currently using the red light for eat until I get paid here soon then I fully intend on getting the right light set up. I have a nice sized enclosure for him and he seems happier now that he's got the extra space. He doesn't try To climb out anymore. I feel bad that I can't afford everything all at once. However what I've got now is better than the one by one box he lived in before I got him. And one last thing Lou is my tort my name is Luke. It's my fault I caused the confusion. Thank you again for your time and input. It is greatly appreciated

If they put out UVB and UVA, then yes. I don't, because I am not sure the UVB is adequate.

Lol, I figured Lou was your Russian's name, so it is good to know what his owner's name is too. ;)
