I'm on my son's kindle, so haven't got a pic handy to post, but thought I'd chime in!
About 20 years ago when I was on the road as a sales rep, I bought this little silver ring of a tortoise (no kidding- it's legs, tail, and head moved- it was the cutest thing) and I called it my "road buddy" and named it Wilson.
About 10 years later, my mom gave me a necklace of a tortoise carved from some sort of stone. Of course I called that Wilson as well.
Over the last 9 years (since we moved here and bought this house), I bought 7 garden tortoises (made of clay and various materials) and called each of them Wilson.
So last September when I brought a tortoise home in a box and explained to my husband that "I couldnt just leave him there" and told him the previous owner hadn't even bothered to name him... and then asked "What should we call him?" -- my husband just looked at me and said "ARE YOU KIDDING ME??
My oldest wise gulf coast box turtle is named Dr. Samuel Johnson. (Boswell died about 7 years ago.) The girls are Madame D'Arblay, Mrs Thrale and Queenie.
The RTs are Uncle Vanya, Aunt Maude, and Olga. The hermann's is Zenobia. The ambo is Bertrand Russell, called Bertie, because they have the same undershot chin. Naming him Russell after the philosopher was a compliment to my husband.
I've had Johnson for 39 years and never presume to call him by his first name.
Our adult Russian was unnamed when we got him, so we named him Vladimir. After looking at the geographical distribution of Russian tortoises, a purely Russian name didn't seen right. So we gave him the last name Khan. So we call him Vladi, but Vladimir Khan when he's being introduced to new people.
Tidgy, from Tgg (Testudo graeca graeca) and meaning small.
I also had two others as a kid called Speedy and Gonzalez. The former was very fast and the latter not so, but the two names went together, of course.
