In the throes of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai...out of nowhere came this kid from Texas...and I thought the heir apparent to Stevie Ray Vaughn...only far superior! Well...he remained relatively low key, but here's Eric Johnson with Cliffs of Dover...

The difference between SRV and Johnson is that Johnson isn't a hyped-up creation from the record company...he's really original!

An excellent imitation of Hendrix and Earl Hooker, no doubt. The dude could put on a show, alright, but also consider that Double Trouble (Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton) is such an outstanding rhythm section that they can (and have) made some fairly uninspiring artists sound quite a bit better...w/o them creating the pulse, SRV often didn't have that impact (ever hear him w/ David Bowie?)...

Many years ago, when SRV was just getting some notice, he was the opening act for Willie Nelson And Family at Armodillo World Headquarters, and Willie very kindly invited him to sit in on "Milk Cow Blues"...SRV came out and made all the obligatory "guitar faces" and all the cute guitar tricks like playing it behind his back...every time SRV would do his "Guitar slinger" act w/ his Stratocaster, Willie'd play the same stuff back to him on "Trigger", his well-worn Martin gutstring. Finally, Willie took off on a Django-meets-Les Paul-meets-Wes Mongomery-flavored solo (I assume you know who those guys are) and brought down the house...

SRV was lost by that point, as that was outside of his genre (he eventually got to where he could hang, though). SRV just took off that plumed hat of his and bowed his head, humbbled, to the roar of applause from that audience.

SRV played pretty good Blues-Rock, but Willie plays pretty good guitar, period.

hhhhhm ok

I don't discount Double Trouble, they were amazing. I think EVERYONE has heard him with Bowie and about that, Bowie invited SRV to play on his album so one can safely assume that SRV played what and how Bowie wanted, gun for hire, especially at the start of his short career. Considering the major success of Let's Dance and the singles it produced. I guess his work there was adequate.
'nuff said there :p

The Willie story sounds awesome, wish I coulda seen it. But like you said yourself, Willie invited him up, SRV hung in til the very end and then tipped his hat to the Braided One. Considering he was the opening act and Willie was/is a legend, I call that classy and smart. Whether he could have upstaged Willie or not isn't the point, it would have been stupid to do so or even attempt. I don't think SRV or anyone is the best at anything, just different. In his case it's different in a way that influences hundreds of thousands of guitarists even today.

The Wiki article is pretty long but here's the highlights:
Vaughan won ten Austin Music Awards and was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. He won five W. C. Handy Awards and was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2000. In 1985, he was named an honorary admiral in the Texas Navy. Vaughan had a single number one hit on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for the song "Crossfire". His album sales in the US stand at 11.5 million units. Family Style, released shortly after his death, won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. It became his best-selling, non-Double Trouble studio album with over a million shipments in the US. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked him seventh among the "100 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time". He also became eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
I assume that there are lots of different guitarists that one could call more soulful, more technical, more insert adjective here but SRV had that certain something, charisma, charm, insert adjective here, that made/makes people stop and pay attention. He was a star and people knew it. Legends don't invite guys that are "pretty good" to play with them.

Anyway this is way more than I intended to type so let's get back to the tunes!

Modest Mouse, Smashing Pumpkins, and The Smiths, lately, but I am liking the mention of SRV, Albert King, Coltrane, and Florence and the Machine on this page. Good stuff, there. :D

I have been listening to Bob Dylan for that last couple of weeks. His older albums; "Blond on Blond," and "John Wesley Harding." Also, lots of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. I have to go onto ITunes now! LOL!

BRAND NEW VAN HALEN!

Uh...sorta...a few of these gems are re-works of songs from their original demos! Still cool though. Better than any of the crap they wrote with Sammy! BTW A lot of the songs they did on 5150 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge...were written in the Dave era...oh well! No use crying over spilt tequila! Good luck with Chickenfoot!:D

WOW!

I post to many "What are you listening to" threads in various forums of wildly different focuses and I gotta say this is easily one of the most musically diverse in the bunch! Tort folks are an eclectic breed it seems. So here is one I can't post in a lot of those other forums.
