Hallo alltogether!

our 9 year old female aldabra has very wet eyes since some weeks, so that now the whole area around the mouth is wet.
Our vet made a diagnosis of cough and gave antibiotic eye drops and baytril antibiotics as tablets .
Since 5 Days ye have no heeling in sight.

does anybody had similar problems or suggestions?

Hi Jemo:

Welcome to the forum!!

Usually wet eyes means the tortoise is being kept too dry. Can you give us some more information about how you have the tortoise set up? At nine years of age, the tortoise is probably close to 100lbs, right? So I'm assuming she is outside?

Sometimes wet eyes and wet mouth means they are being kept too hot. Now that it's winter are they being kept inside in a hot environment? I know my Sulcata at times has both wet eyes and mouth and I notice his shed is hotter then normal.

hy emysemys!

keeping it outside?
we live in Germany and have heavy snew and - 10 degrees at the moment!

The enclosure is a glass house, 22 degrees celsius at night, 25 at daytime, heat lamps up to 40 degrees as they want to.
Humidity at abaut 60 to 90 percent, day and nightime.
The weight is 22 Kilogramms.

The situation is getting worse, so tomorrow i will bring the tortoise to a specialised vet-clinic for diagnosis and trearment.

Much effort, but i hope the right decission.
greetings

Jemo

You aren't keeping the tortoise warm enough. I'll bet it has a respiratory infection. She should be at LEAST 27 celcius during the day and warmer would be better.

Hi

we braugt the Aldabra to the vet clinic.
He has great experience with tropical tortoises.
X-ray shows a heavy "Lungenentzündung" i dont know the english word.
It is very serious. The Vet will treat it in the clinic, supposed at least for the next 2 weeks.
We hope it was not too late for the tortoise.

I wish you and the tortoise the best. They are a very strong and hardy species.

Jemo, I did have a similar problem with my aldabras. If you have not already, it is important to isolate him from any other tortoises. I just posted my experience on a thread named "Bo" on this aldabra forum in case you are interested. I know what you're going through. Good luck to you both!
