We are Ryan and Lindsey, nice to meet everyone! We brought our Russian Tortoise home a week ago. His name is Gary, and he is a tiny little dinosaur! My 7 year old son asked for a tortoise for Christmas....so off we went and purchased him from a Petco--which we now know is HORRIBLE! We found out that many times if you don't know their hatch date, and see them in the store, they have most likely be wild-caught and shipped here in a flat-rate box with 60 others. Knowing this saddened us deeply. But we resolved to give Gary the best life here with us than he would have had elsewhere. We believe him to be roughly 5-8 years old or so, judging by size and shell condition. We live in in the country (sort-of) right outside Columbus, Ohio.
With mistake #1 of buying him at a Pet store, we also made mistake #2 of buying a glass tank to keep him in. And here we thought we knew everything about owing pets! We are now planning for a big indoor enclosure, building that very very soon!! and Ryan is mapping out the backyard for his outdoor enclosure for the summer months.
We have also decided against mistake #3 of letting our 7 year old keep Gary in his room. Nope! Gary needs his grown-ups to protect him for now, but we are looking forward to passing him down when our son is an adult.
We are doing our research thoroughly, but any suggestions or encouragement is always welcome!

Hello,Ryan and a very warm welcome to Tortoise Forum to you, Lindsey and Gary.:)
Nothing wrong with a glass enclosure as long as it's big enough. Excellent for keeping in heat and humidity.
However for an adult Russian, you need at least 8 foot by 4, as a bare minimum, so most store bought glass terrariums won't cut it.
Nice to have you with us.
