Question. Is it ok to use plant grow bulbs instead of UVB bulbs? Was thinking if its suppose to be a sunlight replacement for plants, why not for the tortoises? Can someone tell me the pros and cons if there are any? Or is it just not a good idea at all?
Thanks for your time. [/font]

Wrong light spectrum for an animals eyes.

Plants will probably grow just fine under a florescent tube designed for reptiles. I started a bunch of African hibiscus under regular florescent lights and it worked great.

Plants use the visible portion of the spectrum, which does not include uvb. Any uvb produced by a grow light is incidental.

I've never heard of plant grow bulbs. What type of light do they give off?

Depends on the type of grow light.

ok, thanks for the input. So the UVB that are of the twisted variety are bad from what I have read on here, but what about the ones that screw into a regular socket that are not twisted? Just UVB, no heat produced, those are ok?
