I live on Long Island, New York and this turtle recently found its way into my pond and I am curious to what species it is. Can anyone help identify it? I think it may be an Eastern Chicken Turtle or Eastern Painted Turtle. It is approximately 7-10 inches in length.

I don't think it is a chicken turtle or a painted. Might just be a old melanistic slider. Only a scute count can tell.

Haha I can tell. And I totally agree, it's so much fun. Apparently you also like checking the forums in a timely manner, which is more than I can say for myself right now. I gotta get it together!

I'm just going to star posting random threads and pictures of unknown turtles... To keep this game going lol. Funny stuff. It's always nice seeing these threads, helps me learn how they look and name.
