Did you know?

  • The Aldabra tortoises have been introduced in Rodrigues (Mauritius) as an 'analogue species'. Rodrigues use to have the world's highest density of land tortoises. It took less than a century of human interactions to drive Rodrigues' endemic species to extinction.
The rewilding has been very successful at the Francois Leguat Giant tortoise and Cave Reserve, a wildlife Sanctuary in Plaine Corail, Rodrigues.

Esmeralda, said to be over 170 years old and around 350kg/771lbs:

~ I have read this from other sources, unbelievable that a female is 771 pounds.

~ Thank you for your post, truly awesome.

~ Do you actually take these photo's yourself?

Of course!

This photos were taken April 2018 on our latest trip to Aldabra Atoll. We usually stop on most of the outer Islands on the 2 x 1000 km sailing trip to check the actual Aldabra tortoise populations.

It is not always fun going to Aldabra, it is really a very remote and isolated place on earth!!
This year we had hard weather and broken masts on our ship!
