Tortoise with sight loss

Our family heirloom is approx 70 - 80 yrs old we believe. It's been noticeable over the past few years his sight is compromised. Bright sunlight especially seems to make it worse. Having read some threads about hats there seems to be mixed views on the use of them but I feel some sort of baseball peak protruding over his head would protect his eyes a little. Is there anything out there we could use/buy to help the old fella out?
All suggestions welcome, we want to give him the best life possible for the time he has left with us.

Trying to think. . . You can't attach anything to his head because it is occasionally withdrawn into his shell; If you figure out some sort of umbrella affair to attach to his shell, he'll rub it off under bushes and in his burrow. My imagination's not good enough to be of any help, I guess. But we have many inventive members here. Hopefully one of them can come up with something.

How about installing shadecloth over his yard?
At the moment he has free run of our back garden as it's safe for him. He knows where his house is and finds it every night but it's too large an area to cover. There are areas of shade during the day.
He loves the sun to be honest as it warms him up but we're sure its inhibiting his ability to find his food.
Over here in the UK it's only just getting warm enough for him to be outside all the time, he came out of hibernation 2 weeks ago so he's really just finding his feet this year but we've noticed a difference in him already.
Was thinking of trying to design something and get it printed out on a 3d printer that straps to his shell without stopping him from enjoying his little bit of freedom.
