I'm in a N. Atlanta suburb and found this guy in my driveway. I've never seen it before and just want to be sure it hasn't wondered off from a family. Or, that it wasn't meant as a 'gift' to me by a neighbor that's tired of their pet ... most of my neighbors know I have a leopard tortoise & am soft hearted. It seems that we're a bit far north for a gopher (saw them regularly in FL) but is this a young gopher tortoise? It's about 6" across. My "seek" app has come back w everything from wood turtle, Texas tortoise, common box, ornate box, spotted. None of those are common here ... well except the box turtle.
It wandered off under my juniper while I was researching pics & couldn't get other angles. He's fairly boxed in where he is so it's likely I'll see him again especially if out of his element. If he's native then I'll just enjoy him while I can but if not, I can try to grab him before winter. Thanks!

He might appreciate a saucer of water and maybe a little chunk of fruit.
