have had my red foot tortoise for over a year now and ive noticed a cut next to his mouth up to his ear multiple times, it heals, and then when he opens his mouth widely to eat or tear away his food with his claw, he rips it open again. he just ripped it open again tonight and i usually just let it heal on its own without any intervention but i dont like that it keeps happening. what can i do to fix my little guy to hopefully stop the injury from reoccurring?

You can cut up his food so he doesn't have to open his mouth so wide. But injuries in this location, as well as injuries on the back of the neck where the shell rubs and the skin has to stretch to get the head in and out, are very hard to heal.

A vet might be able to give you a better answer.
