Hello everyone,
Just brought home a Burmese Star Tortoise and was wondering if anyone can help identify the gender? Appreciate any thoughts. Thank you!
Bill

Yes, way to young. You have a couple years at least, likey 3 or 4 unless it's a Male and he flashes you around 2 or 3 years old before it can be sexed.

Too young, you can get an idea with Indian stars around 110-120 grams but Burmese get bigger and require more time to sex.

You should also look at the care guide, closed chambers are important for both platys and elegans and yours appears to be open topped.

How old is your tortoise? It is very early to sex that one visually, but if I had to make a guess, I would call it a probable male based on the tail size and the anal scute morphology as of now.

Thanks you are correct the tank initially didn’t have a top but I got an acrylic sheet to cover it. With the humidifier controller set to a constant 80%.
Planning to order an enclosure from https://m.facebook.com/pg/SmartTortoiseKeeper but always open to any suggestion.

Did not ask but I got him from ATC and he was born this year. He’s about 2.5 inches now. From what I can find online it’s what I suspect as well.

Well, you could try asking Andrew for the incubation temperature (if he knows it). I have bred loads of Burmese Stars and from personal experience can tell you that 85F or lower will produce males quite reliably. You need to have incubation temps about 88-89F to get females.

I bought some from Andrew earlier this year, he told me incubation ranged from 86 to 89F. I can't even guess at their sexes at this point. They are in the 50-70g range

Here is a one year old (not from Andrew). It is 168grams, incubated at 89f, has an extra scute and a split scute. I suspect strongly female.

Thanks for the reference, but Smart Tortoise Keeper is indeed my Smart Enclosures facebook page for easy reference.
