Took them a long time to prove our theory that pairs don't work.

They were together for 90+ years before the troubles began ... what do you think made the difference, or engendered the change?

I want a couple tortoises I have to make babies. They are housed with others, but don't seem too intersted in each other. This article might explain why. Sometimes tortoises go another way, or just aren't that into another.

It's the story of a Gallapagos pair that got along together great, until they didnt.

I bet they didn’t get along great at all. The zookeepers likely just mistook “Snuggling”, “following”, etc. as signs of affection.

I have read this is common mating behavior, in addition to being aggressive behavior. Perhaps it is like dogs, a show of dominance that sometimes produces babies. I had four dogs. They were all girls. But they would hump each other all the time. A daily thing. Kind of weird.
