In all the time I have spent on Cape Cod I never witnessed such an influx of "peanut bunker"; common name for a juvenile menhaden. (In my best impression of Carl Sagan) Billions upon billions of them swarmed the shallows of almost all beaches; bay and ocean side. Stranded by the tides or driven ashore by larger predators they could be found in the surrounding grass; and even the lower branches of the scrub pines. Not sure if it was the smell or the color; but Titan found them irresistible. I know that animal proteins are not recommended for grassland tortoises; so I tried to keep his intake to a minimum. But it did not take long for him to find a few; that I did not see. No ill effects were noticed; and everything passed with no problems.
