I've decided to cut down a raggedy Arborvitae tree that grows in Diego's (Russian tortoise) area. I already cut down its five ugly brother's and now it's this guys time!
So I'd love to put something there that Diego can eat. He has a giant enclosure with tons and tons of weeds so I'd like some kind of edible tree or shrub. I live in the Pacific Northwest so it must like water and be tolerant of winter freezes. A huge bonus would be something that had leaves in the winter when weeds are more scarce.
It's a sunny spot hemmed in by a fence and rock wall to a space of 5ft x 3.5ft
So far I'm thinking a hardy hibiscus or dwarf mulberry.
So my questions are:
Do Russian torts tend to like these?
Is there a particular variety that is nice or delicious?
Is there a plant I haven't considered that would work in this space?
Thank you fellow tortoise gardeners!
