Pete my Russian lives outside during the day in a large enclosure and loves to roam. He goes into a dog crate and burrows for the night which I go and latch the door shut for security - the dog crate is kept outside in his enclosure and he loves it, sometimes I find him napping in it during the day.

With our "winter" getting closer and possible some heavy rainfall predicted for this season does anyone have experience with a Russian being outdoors for the Southern California Winter? Or is it best to bring him inside and if that's the case what type of enclosure to keep him happy? He HATES a glass terrarium and just claws at the corners all day.

Any tips, tricks and advice greatly appreciated!

It will be our first winter with him

I am not from your area, but with a lot of rain, I would think he should be brought it. Cold and humid equals sick tortoise. He will likely try to hibernate, and outside is not safe.
They need as large of an enclosure as possible. There is an enclosure section with several ideas. Here is a link to it.
