Hi there, im quite new to this. Ive had my Hermanns tortoise for a few months now (got him from a friend who felt he wasnt getting the attention he deserved) getting on really well. Find it quite difficult to know which advice to follow as you get so many mixed information. Anyway....PLEASE HELP- My tortoise has a sore on his left hind leg, i feel this may be from rubbing on his shell. Ive bathed him this morning once i noticed it and am wondering what to do now. Its not bleeding although is quite red. The vets isnt open until monday and have found some info online to say to cleanse it with betadine and an antibacterial ointment. (im confused as it appears the person means a human ointment such as Savlon?) He doesnt appear to be bothered by it...still wondering around quite happily and neither up nor down. If someone could help id really appreciate it. Thanks xxx

Hi Diane,
We would need a few pictures to even have a clue as to whats going on with his leg. Yes you can use human antibiotic ointment on your tortoise.

Hi there, ive been to the chemist as no vet is available. They have given me a zinc and castor ointment (equivelant to Sudocrem) so ive applied this and im limiting his space to prevent him picking up any germs. Ill try take some photos later as ive just applied the cream. The only query i have is whether it may be his shell that is causing the rubbing and if so what can be done? Should i apply something to the shell to prevent this while he's healing? So confused and no vets?! He seems genuinely fine in himself, eating and exploring and isnt pulling the leg in or anything when i lift him. Thanks for your help xx

hey thank you. Ive found one in Cumbernauld also, he's a reptile specialist as well as a tortoise owner so hoping to get an appointment with him later in the week. Buddy's doing great, had another wee soak today and is letting me put the cream on no bother. Seems happy enough its not stopping him getting around, i think hes a bit bemused wondering what im doing to the leg lol. Thanks for all your help though. Especially as im knew to this and was extremly stressed xxxx
