England,
Here’s my Pumpkin. Chilling on my chest. I interact as much as I can to build trust and bond. I had a lady over road saying it was over kill and I’ll ruin the tortoise by interacting with the tort the way I do. I hold her/him while I’m sorting the fresh food out. Same when I’m spot cleaning. When pumpkin is eating sleeping or soaking I’ll leave her/him to it. But I do observe when soaking. She/he has a shallow pool in enclosure. I’ll sit in garden so pumpkin can roam about. I won’t leave him/her unattended when outside as pumpkin is only 4months. Am I doing wrong?

I would love to see your red foot babies. Pumpkin is in photo attached chilling on my chest this morning while waiting for the yummy greens ?

Pumpkin is a little cutie! Hate to be the bad guy here but torts get over stressed from being handled a lot. Being picked off the ground in the wild means that they are going to be eaten by predator. They also don’t “bond” with their keepers like dogs and cats do. They may greet you when they see you come into the room but that’s because they recognize you as the food god or goddess.

I have a 1 year old redfoot tortoise named phoenix. I don't think that you are interacting with your tort to often. I handle mine every once in a while and he loves it he actually will just fall asleep with me on the couch while I am watching tv. I take him outside everyday when the weather allows but just like you, I don't leave him unattended because he is just so small and i'm afraid he will get lost or eaten by a hawk.

England,
I know they don’t bond. It’s more the trust side of things.
I pick pumpkin up always make sure her feet are touching me so her legs are never dangling if that makes sense. She never puts her head in. She walks to my shoulder. Head always out. She doesn’t pull back in to her shell which I thought she would do. I give her a little scratch under her chin which she seems to enjoy. Then I’ll had feed her some watercress. I don’t hold pumpkin long. Maybe a few mins at a time. I put her back in her enclosure and she will sit at the front watching me before she spots the food and walks as fast as she can to it ?

Yep pumpkin has done that. I’ve had pumpkin next to me on couch and she falls asleep. She seems to enjoy the interaction. Like I said in above post. She never hides in her shell. She’s always out when I’m handling her. It’s all new to me. So I’m learning and so is she.

I try to limit handling with my reptiles so that they are barely handled if at all. Some torts tolerate handling, some are ok with it, and some hate it. They are all more comfortable with all feet securely on the ground. I have nothing against handling, I just wouldn’t do much of it. Mine don’t stick their heads in their shells either but struggle like a pro.

England,
I’m mesmerised. I can watch pumpkin for hours in her enclosure. She now has watercress I’ve planted in there and the dandelion plant. I’ve just seeded some more. I’ve also just planted some oat cat grass for her. Aswell as loads of other plants that are safe I got the list from this site. And kinda went seed buying crazy ?.
love this site. Never knew there was so much our torts can eat all at our finger tips too.
she will sit in the dandelion plant. Nibble then go back to watercress plant. she loves the beetroot greens too.
She is a funny thing tho. Always makes me smile. When I put her on my chest she will walk to my shoulder. Push her head out as far as she can and then I feel her pushing her head to my neck. Then she goes sleep.
it’s kinda cute. And so adorable.
