Hi everyone,

I am new here. In fact I´ve signed in mainly because of my new tortoise. I already have some marginatas but this is my first redfoot.
When I bought him/her, I thought it is a male. But after I red few of your posts I am totally lost and I have no idea what do I have.
I bought him from the pet shop so I do not know how old is he. But he has to be young because he is only 6 inches long. Even though I still think he is a male he odes not haveconcave stomachs at all. He is totally flat on bottom, like female should be.

I would really appreciate some help, mainly from those, who have some experiences with sexing those tortoises, because I want to buy another one and i do not want to end with two males.

Thanky for your help. Dominika

None of the pictures showed up but at 6" long it's going to be too small to tell. They all look male at first.

Without knowing the hatch date you'll never know how old it is as diet and housing play a big role in growth. If properly houses at can be as young as 18 months at six inches and if it wasn't fed right and has stunted growth who know how old it can be.

Best guess without being able to open the pictures is that it's somewhere between 18-36 months and is too young to sex.

Maybe it's my phone that won't let the pics open. Can anyone else see them?

Okay the pictures opened up now.

It's too young to tell

I'm betting it's at least 2 or 3 years old

Here's a chart to help you later, like maybe a few more years later

Hi Dominika, and welcome to the Forum!

That looks like a male tail to me, however, I'm pretty bad at determining the sex of the RF tortoises. Let's ask @N2TORTS and @allegraf

Like they said, he is still small but that grooved tail says MALE to me all the way

Thank you so much. I am now sure my red foot is a girl. I've never seen that chart before. It was really helpful. My "girl" is 8 inches. Of course, we named her a boy's name so he would turn out to be a girl.

Thank´s for your posts. I also thought it is a male i was just confused because he is totally flat from the bottom. But if he is still young it will probably change later. And tortdad thanks for the chart. It will be useful in the future.

Hi there,

I am here after a year to upload news.
So my "male" seems to be 100% male. At least I think so. I am posting some photos of him. I would be glad if you would confirm to me that I really have a male.

And I really, really need help. Again. :)

I have an opportunity to buy three beautiful tortoises (even if they developed some pyramiding).
I like mainly the slight marbling.
But I really need help with sexing. I am going to buy them on Friday or Saturday. But I would like to buy only females. Or at least I do not want to end with 3 new males. So please can you help me with the sexing?
I uploaded all photos I have about them.

I would be really grateful for every advice.

Thanks, Dominika

They look female to me, though I am a bit of a novice.

Picture 1 and 3 look female.
Picture 2 looks to have male anal scutes but with the small tail it looks female also. It could be the camera angle that makes the tail look all though.
These 3 look like cherryheads.
See what some more experienced keepers say.
@cdmay. @allegraf. @N2TORTS. @Turtlepete.

At this point the butt-shots of this latest animal (s) appear to show young females. Nice color and healthy looking too...except for that bit of pyramiding. With proper care this will diminish as they grow and will be less noticeable.
