I'm still getting the hang of this but I would say female. The anal scutes are typical and (I think) so is the tail. I hope others can chime in to concur or prove me wrong so that I can learn more
Thanks for the replies, I'm in East Sussex and my names Natasha.
I'm pretty sure my red foot is not a cherry we've had him/her for just over a year and the pet shop estimated that it was 3 years old then so I guessed we could now determine the sex? I've done so much research on the red foot but I'm still learning any info is greatly received
Many thanks
Ditto to Carl (cdmay)- but then I will always defer to his vast experience.
Your tort is a bit young to be sure, but here are the key things to look for:
- Shell shape- Northern types of male Red-footeds tend to have a narrowed waist and deeply indented belly.
- LONG tail. Males have incredibly long tails that are usually tucked into a rear 'leg pit'.
- The anal scutes (the last two on the plastron) make a wide, almost straight across angle at the rear, and have a wide gap between them and the nearby marginals. This space allows it to move the long tail a lot.
