Stumbled upon this little guy as I was adding some more reinforcing to a fence. Pretty cool. Very good at climbing around in the trees. He never touched the ground.

Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus)

My favorite snake. My dad has a smooth green snake. I love them!

This one is a new species for me to see on the property. Was very hard to spot. I have seen indigos, rats, cottonmouths, racers, and copperheads so far in the 10 years. The indigo is awesome. Super fast, I have never been able to snap a photo or catch it. He bites then scrams off, They are very fast snakes.

Very pretty. I love snakes. However, do you have to worry about them hurting your torts?

I did have an incident with a large rat snake eating some baby sulcatas like 8 years ago. But that building has been torn down. Now I only see snakes outside and eating the mice. And the baby torts or small ones don't get left out unprotected.

They are awesome.

Here is another snake encounter yesterday. Cottonmouth in the greenhouse. He was happy to find some water.

And then today I caught him and let him loose at a nearby pond. The tort buildings are along a huge creek. But its dried up around this time of year. So we are a lot creatures in search of water.

The only snakes we see in CT are harmless.
I am getting a little nervous about our future move to FL. With all my pets and livestock, I dont like the idea of poisonous snakes lurking about.

You will rarely see them. If you do, they won't do anything unless provoked or pestered. Its often rare to have an incident with a bite. It does happen for sure but not on large scales.

There are no poisonous snakes in Florida, so not need for concern! ;) Just a few venomous species.
