I don't see a problem with it as long as your bedding is thick so your tort does not get burned.
I would put it on a thermostat. Some people use the heat rope type tied to chicken wire on a thermostat to keep humidity up. I don't see the difference in the two.

Yep go it on the 500r, i just wasnt sure if it was bad if the tort room went above 80 degrees, if so id put an ac in the room. Got 5 inches of cypress, enough right?

Sorry, for taking so long to answer you back. I would use some kind of ac unit in the room to make sure it does not get to hot in the room. Red foots like it 80-85 and the same for humidity at least that is what I try to keep my indoor set up . I don't know how you keep your temperatures set if you have no climate control in the room. I would be careful in using any heating sorce in a room with no climate control. I would put some top soil in the bottom and the cypress on the top . Add some plants to the enclosure it helps keep humidity up. See tortoisetable to get a list of tort.safe food you can plant.

Turn your enclosure into a closed chamber and you won't lose the humidity and can ditch the UTH.

Hey guys,

The room is "climate controlled", its just that my house is 100+ years old, so we have baseboard heating, and no central air, so i have to use window AC units. Since he needes in the mid 80's everyday I wasn't sure if me even putting an AC unit in the room was important, on the really hot day last week the room was 84 degrees. Then i realized i thought i recalled reading not to use the pad if the in room temperature exceeded 80. Ive got the pad and lamp on a thermostat. I keep 5 inch substrate, 4 inch of cypress and 1 inch reptibark, but i may be switching to peat moss. For some reason in NJ, no where sells cypress mulch, so im forced to buy the zoo med stuff which is way over priced.

I keep most of the enclosure closed, i cover it with plexiglass, even still if the heat pad is off humidity drops some, down to about 50%. I will try the peat moss and see how it does with a few plants inside. I planted some flower seeds which are sprouting, but a whiles away from being tort ready. For a lil guy, hes like a bull dozer, lol.

If your room is 84 that is fine, just turn off the heat sources in the enclosure and double check that the enclosure is staying above 80 still.
