I'm jazzed over this...

I've had these redfoots for about 6 years. I raised them from 6 inches to adult and they are just now starting to lay eggs. I've gotten about 15 so far but none have proven to be fertile... yet.

You can always tell when a tortoise is nesting...

It was late in the afternoon and it was hot out... 90F. I was hoping to get her dropping the eggs but this is the best I could do...

This is what I found the next morning. I was surprised to see the eggs exposed but was kind of expecting it considering the texture of the soil... note the rock in the nest. None of the eggs were cracked.

She ended up dropping 7 eggs and half of them look good. I'm hoping I can post the photos of some dynamite Cherryheads in the near future.

Ed,

Just like I've not hatched Leopards tortoise eggs.. I have hatched redfoot eggs.

How do you determine that half of them look good?

What size/age are the males?

when they have this crystaline look to them they are usually not good. When they are pure white... the odds are in your favor.

The males are about 8 to 9 inches scl.

Hopefully this time will be the time that hatches out. Any idea why in the past they weren't fertile?

Yvonne, sounds like your doing a little natural flying with all those eggs you have gotten. :D
