It has always been a dream of mine to have radiated tortoises. I am going to be spending the next few years designing an indoor huge, elaborate enclosure for a baby radiated tortoise hatchling (which I plan to acquire my first in about 5 years max)! Since I am going to school to be an exotic animal veterinarian. I later plan to start a breeding program to help bring back this gorgeous yet critically endangered species. Who will have baby radiata available in the next 1-4 years? The enclosure is going to be set up tortoise table style on the ground with a built in tile shallow water and basking area and real plants. I know they eat Optunia cactus and other vegetation in the wild, but what other plants should go into the enclosure? And what about substrate? I would like to encorporate a sandy substrate to imitate the natural habitat for the hatchlings. Are any of you breeders I could possibly purchase from in the future? And I am going to acquire a CBW permit from the US Fish and Wildlife. Are there any other permits/regulations/licenses needed to acquire radiata? I live in northwest Indiana. Looking for lots of info. All is welcome! Thanks!
