Hello everyone,
I am posting for a 14 year old girl named Lilly. Lilly took in a 7 year old female Sulcata two weeks ago that was being extremely neglected. I actually met Lilly on facebook in a group.. I saw she needed help and I wanted to see what was going on & what help she needed... I am in Florida, but Lilly & her tortoise live in Syracuse NY. When she got the 7 year old tort it was sick so Lilly & her Mom took Loka to the vet, found out she had a respiratory infection and was given antibiotics injections for her.. Loka weighs 28 lbs and is staying in the house full time especially because it is to cold outside now in NY. Lilly has a kiddie pool with dirt in it if Loka wants to dig, has a uvb light & basking heat light set up for her to go under anytime, she is eating great(Timothy Hay, Greens, also Lilly said she loves Aloe Vera), getting calcium weekly, pooping good and feeling so much better now.. However, Loka has now laid two eggs 3 days apart from each other. One she laid on her pillow under the basking light, and the other one she just laid in the middle of the floor. We don't think Loka has ever laid eggs before, and was not around a male tort so the eggs are non fertile. Lilly has read & did some research and is now very worried that Loka has egg binding because she only laid 2 eggs 3 days apart from each other. Lilly & her mom spent a bunch of money taking Loka to the vet when they got her 2 weeks ago for the respiratory infection, but since than, Lilly's mom is out of work due to work shutting down and Lilly's dad passed away recently so they do not have the funds to take Loka back to the vet for an x-ray to see if she could have egg binding.. My heart really breaks for Lilly, she already loves Loka and says she can't loose her.. She is afraid something is wrong. I am a "Grandma" and I can see the maturity that Lilly has & how much she is trying to do everything right.. It is a huge responsibility to take on neglected tort, but Lilly is doing a good job, does love her and Lilly's Mom really loves Loka too. Lilly has even reached out to every group possible that offers donations to help a pet in need so she could get the x-rays done.. The Vet is Dr. Wolfer at Liverpool Animal Health Center.
I have some photo's that Lilly gave me of Loka, the eggs she laid, and the medication she was on for the respiratory infection, her back area(cloaca)
What are the symptoms of egg binding?
Is it possible for Loka to have only 2 eggs to lay?
Is it normal to lay an egg 3 days apart from each other? .
THANK YOU in advance for anyone that responds.. I know I do not know this young girl, but I know she loves her tort, I know she is afraid of loosing her and really has it in her mind that Loka has egg binding and would need surgery.. I know she tried to post in a few groups on facebook and ask questions but I do not think anyone realized she is 14 years old, and they told her she was going to loose her tort if she did not take to a vet, that it was animal abuse for not taking it to a vet, etc etc.. AFTER I realized something seemed off, I messaged her, and than got the whole story of her only being 14, it is her & her mom, her dad recently died, her mom now just lost her job, and now Lilly is afraid she is going to loose another love(her tort)... My heart breaks for her, I know she is 100% taking the responsibility of caring for Loka, she did the injections herself, she feeds her, cleans up her poop, picks her up & puts her in the tub, and spends her days talking to Loka, and just hanging out with her. Loka needed Lilly just as much as Lilly needs Loka..
