So I've been onto a Tortoise protection Facebook page. There is a lady who was very concerned about her friends tortoise as it will not open its eyes, it's very thin, doesn't eat or drink and is kept in a vivarium.

She has managed to persuade her friend to let her try and make him better so she has taken him away until the owner has researched how to properly care for him.

She has been asking for advice.

So far he will not eat anything so she is going to try and bathe him in water mixed with baby food. She has also bathed his eyes which are terribly swollen. See picture (this is not him but said this is what they look like).

She can't afford to take him to the vet and neither can the owner.

Do any of you have advice or know of charities that will be able to help with this poor little thing?

The best advice is that she joins this forum, post pictures and talks to us direct. It will be much more efficient that via an intermediary.

We need the 4 important temperatures: warm side, cool side, directly under the basking lamp and overnight minimum.

We need to confirm the species, its diet and the conditions in which it is kept.

And the tort needs soaking for a good 30 minutes, twice a day, in warm water until it recovers.

With eyes we are on the look out for a compact coil UVB which needs removing immediately. Tort can manage without until tube UVB or MVB is bought.

Thanks for your reply. I've copied and pasted it for her and told her which forum to come to.

He really needs to be adopted by someone that knows how to and can afford to care for him. Poor thing.
