It's really hard to tell from the picture, but my mom bought some yellow flowered calla lilies back in the 80s and when they first come up, the leaves look like that. It's not your typical ornamental calla lily, but some related species, I think...might be what it is, but it's tough to tell w/out the flowers or a clearer picture...

Hard to tell by the pic, but I'm fairly certain they're Candleflowers (I have some in my garden). They're a member of the arum family, I think, related to Jack-in-the-pulpit, so definitely NOT edible if that's what they are. The leaves grow almost year-round (even in the north) and the seed-heads are very much like J-i-t-p. good call: that's what my mom's plant was, an arum!
