Not a myth. Just not a failsafe way to age a tortoise. Most tortoises do develop regular growth rings. The seasonal temperatures and different foods available at different times create rings that most often are extremely regular, even in captivity. Once over 15-20 years it becomes almost impossible to use, and with extreme wear, it also can be hard to discern. But it can be amazingly good for estimating the age of a tortoise its first 15 years or so.By the way. Measuring growth rings will not tell you how old your tortoises is. That is a myth.

Probably 8 or nine the scutes show that the people you bought him or her are wrongpet store said they were 4 months old when i baught them a year ago, but my daughter said someone had posted they look older here is a close up of a skute.
