Hi, my name is Pascal. I live in northern California and have always wanted a turtle. Recently I have built a 100 gallon pond with a large basking and hide area as well. I was wondering what turtle I should get. I’ve had my sights on a mud turtle but I’m unsure if it’s a good starting turtle and if it would do fine in my pond. Thank you all.

Welcome!

I have some experience with native muds, but sadly not much with African. Both sliders and muds are hardy. Similar temperament - they don't want to be picked up, but are food motivated and will come to you to eat.

I'm no expert, but mud and musk turtles make great first turtles.
