I drive down to NJ yesterday to pick up a tortoise from a family that felt they could no longer keep her in the manner that she deserved, and she’s settling in to life in NH quite well so far…

Eunice is 374g and 12cm, and seems in good health per my baseline evaluation.

She’ll be in quarantine for 60 days before joining Persephone, Bertha, and Wilhelmina in their enclosure.

Berceuse the quarantine quarters aren’t fancy, I’m hoping to get her out into an outside enclosure that I set up just for her a couple of times a week until it gets too cold here in NH.

She really is a beautiful tortoise and she’s lucky to have found her way to you. This next part of her journey is going to be a great one!

I was shocked today to find that Eunice, alone among my torts, LOVES the Orchard Grass Pellets that I bought as a supplemental food for all of my torts.

download (2).png
Standlee Premium Orchard Grass Pellets are high density, 1/4 in. diameter pellets of Standlee Premium Western Forage. Orchard Grass forage is typically slightly higher in protein and calories compared to Timothy and can be moderate to high in sugar content.

Ingredients:
Naturally Sun-Cured Premium Western Orchard Grass Forage.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein (min.) 8%
Crude Fat (min.) 1.5%
Crude Fiber (max.) 35%

The other torts seems to grudgingly eat it when it's mixed in with other things they like, but I prepped a good amount of it this morning for the Russians and see tore into it as soon as I put it down.

Funny to see the variation in tort-preferences....

Practically a harem.

Whoever has had her certainly made sure she put on some growth; good! Three seventy four seems so tiny to me these days but she is perfect.

She’s been here two months and send to be doing well.

She pooped about a cubic yard while soaking this morning before the weigh-in, so I feel confident this is new weight she’s added since arriving.

I’ll probably introduce her to the other females in the creep tomorrow….

She is pretty. It's strange how round compared to Persephone. or is it just the picture?

No, you’re right, she’s much more domed than Persephone.

There are three sub-types of Russians, and like Chili, I believe Eunice is of the sub-species Testudo horsfieldii horsfieldii, which are known for being domed and nearly as wide as they are long.

I introduced her to the rest of the Russian females this morning and have been keeping an eye on how things are going… I saw a bit of head-bobbing initially, but now they’re all snacking on greens and ignoring each other.

it’s a pretty big enclosure, with lots of stuff to explore and distract, so I’m hopeful.
