One of my friends sent me a link on Craigslist to two free sulcata tortoises. By the time I contacted the owner the larger of the two sulcatas was already taken and the smaller one was still available. She was brought to the owners work and I picked her up from there. She is very underweight, has metabolic bone disease, sandy hard urine, over grown beak and pyramiding. I gave her a good soak in warm water and she did not drink but she did eat grass and lettuce. She is in a temporary enclosure separated from my larger male sulcata. Any advice will be appreciated, thank you.

Thanks for rescuing the poor creature.His/her case seems to be a serious one.:(

How about beginning with soaks: that pyramiding is unbelievable! (Sorry; did not mean to hurt you, OK?)

Hey, Nick:

From the size of that gular, I'm guessing your new female is really a male.

Since he's not drinking, you can offer juicy foods like cucumber, aloe, even watermelon. Are you here at home now or still back east?

I would get some Calcium with D3, plan on lots of sunlight and offer her lots of soaks or a pool. Hope for the best recovery possible.

I looked at a Nile Monitor that a gal was trying to sell on CL because of similar situation recently . It hadn't been handled for so long that she was feeding it with a big long stick !

She was obviously terrified of it ,and he knew it ! I had to pass on that one . Not worth a $ 100.00 !
