Hi,
I've just got a Hermann baby, think it's 2 months old.

We've set it up with a lovely little table set up and the heat is 35 degrees for it.

But it doesn't do much? It just hides under the pier we made for it. Seemingly asleep. Are they meant to not do a lot? When I try to hand feed it it's a little scared, it will eat a bit if I put it down but I'd rather have the bowl for it to go to than keep having to go to it.

Do they normally not do much? It's been since Monday now so was expecting it to settle in and at least explore it's table a bit.

Thanks :)

Hi, and welcome!

Babies are prey, and when they're small, like yours, they do a lot of hiding to stay safe.

Thank you, I've just moved his stuff a bit do you think it's better not to have the food under the heat?

I don’t like that shelf.. looks like a serious fall hazard to me. But maybe that’s just me personally? I’m not familiar with hermans care so maybe this type of shelf is ok for them? Anyone else think that’s not safe for tortoises or am I hover tortoise mom?

The stuff in the soil is it perlite? Because I was under the impression that soil with perlite is a big no no due to impacting risk. (If they eat it which they do it can cause a blockage that could kill) if it’s perlite I would suggest a change in substrate. Sorry I’m not trying to be bossy, I just try to spread what little information I know so that our beautiful babies don’t suffer. I’ve been through a lot of loss especially before I found this group.

Ok awesome, I always feel so bad for new owners because as soon as they post something here everyone jumps on their enclosures, temperature, humidity, this, that and the damn bubble bath.. lol but it’s only because this group has countless people join and they say

the pet store said.....
my family (Mom-aunt-sister-brother-third cousins- friend’s boyfriends brothers cousin said..
the breeder said .....
the vet said....
the amazing Facebook group said....
the GOOGLE said .....
and then they have 300$ worth of crap and a sick tortoise that’s usually to far gone to help. So everyone here immediately is trying to troubleshoot your enclosure before something goes wrong with your tortoise. And people like you (new keepers) are like but I thought I was doing good ?. And you are! At least you’re seeking help before there’s a health issue.

I honestly wish I could just create a computer virus that would delete all of the misinformation about tortoise care that is on the Internet, and in people’s heads..

(Only reason I said vet is because Most* vets have No idea what to do for an ill tortoise, if you need a vet you should look for one on here that is in your area because you will need a reptile specialist)

Welcome to the forum! You have a sweet little baby there. Does your new baby have a name? As you saw, there are a number of tortoise experts on the forum (sadly I’m not one of them) who will help you to have a great relationship with your healthy Hermann tortoise. It can be overwhelming and frustrating when people start giving advice but it is made with love and caring for tortoises. I have a leopard and desert tortoises but I imagine that they are similar to Hermanns in that they like to burrow down into substrate and they like to hide in safe edible plants. Look in the Mediterranean forum about Hermann tortoises and you will find great advice. Please post more pictures of your sweet baby.
