Hello! The previous owner of the house I currently live in left a tortoise in the backyard. I was hoping someone could identify the species of the tortoise for me so I can take better care of it! Also, please let me know if the tortoise looks to be in bad health; there's plenty of water and flowers and leaves in the backyard.

Thank you!

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

It looks like a Chaco tortoise to me. Are you in a South American country?

Thanks for the replies! I do indeed live in South America -- Argentina. Do you guys have any suggestions as to how I should take care of it? It seems to do pretty well in the backyard by itself :)

Lucky! A very rare symmetrical extra scute Chaco and likely a girl to boot. Likely main worry will be to keep from freezing in the Winter. If you like you could try giving some fruits, tomato and romaine lettuce and see if interested in some canned pate' style cat food on occasion. Yours probably grazes on grass and weeds in the yard.
