I found this turtle in the road today. I live outside of Fayetteville NC, as you know has been hit hard with hurricane Mathew. I have never in my years seen a turtle like this. At first I thought it was a snapping turtle. But I just don't know. I will do my best to describe it and I am attaching pictures also. He is a little bit bigger than a computer mouse. Shell is flat on top not rounded. Bottom is hinged both front and back. The tail has what looks and feels like a toe nail attached to the end. He has not showed any aggression towards me. He has lots of loose skin around his head. He has been fairly active since I saved his life from the road. I hope someone can help me identify this little guy.

It's an Eastern Mud Turtle, Kinosternon subrubrum.

Snappers have a rounder shell, with big saw-like serrations on the back part, and a long tail- nearly as long as the shell.

Hope that helps!

Excellent pictures and description! That's the reason Berkeley was able to help with the I.D.

Wow, he's beautiful!!!! Are you going to keep him? I love the bottom of his shell.

Oh, he's adorable. :) Love his colour! ;) Sorry cannot tell you what species he is: am not a tort expert. :(

And a very warm welcome to the forum to both of you! :tort:
