I have river rocks in my tank but I'm not sure if I should switch to sand instead for the base of the tank. I feel like it would be a lot easier to clean.

I good (and I mean GOOD) filter would go a long way towards keeping the tank clean.

How big are the rocks? Sand is usually pretty hard to clean by comparison its easier for dirt/food/poop to get stuck in the sand.

I have a filter that works for a 70 gallon tank and I have a 55 right now but the water looks crystal clear until I give it a cleaning on the weekends

I like to use the small rocks. about 1/2 to 1" in diameter. Sand gets stirred up too easily and can possibly get sucked into the filter and wreak havoc with the pump. The smaller rocks are still easy enough to use the vacuum-type siphon and work through maybe once a month to clean out. cannot do that with larger rocks. I size filters for at least 2x the actual size of the tank, but sounds like yours is doing a good job for now.
