hello how are you. I have 2 tortoise.

sometimes they disappear underground for hours. and all night.

my questions are:

is it healthy? should I leave them until they decide to come out by themselves?

and most importantly how do they breath underground?

Most likely fine, I would leave them. What type of tortoise?

Greek tortoises are very good at "hiding" their digging spot. They're looking for a cool spot to be able to cool down their body. Is there any shade in their enclosure? You can give them a cooling soak in water occasionally too. Maybe if they had a nice artificial cave to retreat into they wouldn't bury themselves. Most tortoises retreat into a safe cave to spend the night away from predators.

My Greek burrows every night, and occasionally gets into “digging moods” and wants to bury herself in odd places
